HALLOWEEN COSTUME: MODERN DAY GEISHA

This costume is my homemade version of a modern day Geisha. If you want to stand out on Halloween without looking like any other standard Geisha costume, this look is sure to get you noticed.

To take on a modern approach, I used pinks, purples and yellows in this costume instead of the more traditional red. A kimono is a must when it comes to the Geisha look. Traditional kimonos are very expensive, so I used these two as an inexpensive alternative with a modern twist. Either kimono blouse can be paired with a pair of basic black leggings. Traditional Geisha shoes are sandal wedges to keep their kimonos out of the mud. To give a contemporary, elegant feel, you can use black heels to glamorize this costume.

Geishas are known for having pure white skin. You can use white costume face makeup from any party store. In customary Geisha makeup, reds are used for the eyes and lips. Use pink and yellow eyeshadow to enhance the modern feel. Make a straight, bold line for the eyeliner, so use liquid liner to achieve this look. Go with pink lipstick to soften up the look.

If you don’t have straight black hair like a Geisha, you can wear a wig. Amazon has some lovely and affordable wigs. Placing white orchids in your hair will complete the look. You can purchase faux orchids from any craft store such as Michael’s. The white orchids seen above are good hair clips to use. Be creative with it by placing a few orchids on the side of your face, leading back into your hair. Use eyelash glue to place the orchids on your face.
